Gifted People and Dysfunction

Bethoven was deaf, and given to outbursts of violent anger. I’m pretty sure he never seriously injured anyone, or we probably would have heard about it. Still, his social skills were…lacking. Not the most cordial and graceful guy in conversations, Bethoven was none the less lauded for his intensity when it manifested itself in music.

Savants are those people like the lead character in “Rain Man”. Dustin Hoffman played the role of a savant man who was severely mentally challenged…except when it came to solving complex equations. He could register numbers like a computer. His brother suddenly decided that his slow brother was cool, when he realized he could take advantage of his brother’s skill to win at the casino.

Albert Einstein is recognized as having the highest trackable IQ of anyone who has ever lived. Although we know Solomon is the wisest, they didn’t have iq tests back then to my knowledge.

Albert Einstein helped create the process of splitting the Atom. He will forever be remembered as a genius, although he himself could not remember his telephone number. It is said by those who knew him, that good old Albert was scatterbrained, to say the least. In fact, his peripheal awareness of the world around him got so bad that they actually would not let the man cross the street alone, lest oncoming cars slammed into the brainy man who wasn’t paying attention.

Internet Marketers who are successful are like this. They have tunnel vision when it comes to working on their latest projects or designing their latest product launch. If you are one of those marketers who wakes up drooling on their keyboard, then you know what I’m talking about. It is  a constant challenge to not let your business strategies and ideas take over your life.

I have found that one of the best ways to keep up with everything while continuing to write material and design product launches, is to have a scheduled time for every thing.

The truth is, it’s easy to let the internet take over the whole day, while leaving life behind.

It is so important to schedule the important things, not the urgent things, into your day.

Meeting a client dead line would usually go int the “urgent” category; after all, they are relying on me to get their  capture page ready, or to start their ad campaign. Deadlines make a task fall within the “urgent” task.

But playing ball with your son, or taking the family to a park are not usually written under our ASAP column. Yet, they are important. What I’m saying is, the important things often get neglected for urgent things, when 20 years from now, I won’t even remember that client.

One of the ways I keep things in balance is by scheduling in the important things, first. I have a definate family day which is untouchable. No one and I mean NO one touches Saturdays. We rest and read the Bible on that day. Now, I don’t get my family on Sunday much because my husband takes them to church on Sunday. But on Saturday, they are all mine. I don’t work, and I don’t do any marketing tasks. I don’t (usually) even do any housework on this day.

During the week, I only get on the computer for about an hour to post that day’s articles. I need to tell you that in the beginning, there were absolutely times that I needed to put the business ahead of my family, so that the funds would be there. And that is important. But I have found that by scheduling my family my quiet time, and of course my devotion to God into the equation first, then I always have time for all of it.

How to Brighten Your Day

Every internet marketer knows that it can be a real drag getting things done. I’m going to show you a simple series of daily discipiplines I do to get the day rolling right.

Sit upright. Yup, you heard me right. Before I fall out of bed, I sit up in bed. Admit it, marketer; getting up in the morning can be hard, especially if your day is swirling before you. Product launches, blog posts, and new ebooks to write. Hey, whatever it is that you do on the internet, take a moment to think it out before your feet hit the floor.

Coffee (sorry, Mormons). If you can’t drink coffee (which I personally consider to be one of the five food groups), then drink something to clear your mind and get you going. An energy shake, just water, or something.

Write. Just write. What needs to get done today? I segment a piece of paper into six sections and as I’m reviewing my day, list my to do’s in each section.

Schedule.  Each “to do” gets a time.

Pray. Yes, it’s really true; without a spiritual program, I know I would never be number one on Google for a variety of search terms. And I unbashedly hasten to say, this only works if your spiritual program includes the right mentorjesus holding the world

Post. Get one post on your blog. after prayer and planning your day, that’s the most important thing you can do. Take a week getting it ready, if needed. If you will post one article per week, minimum, you will get more traffic and reader engagement than you could ever hope for.

How a Whiteboard helps you organize

If you are a list person (and I know I am), then you may find it difficult to ever adjust your schedule once you have it committed to paper.

This is where a whiteboard can really help you. After you decide what you need to do today, just write it, LARGE, on a whiteboard that is big enough for you to see it when you walk across the room.

When we make a list on a little scrap of paper, or even in a Franklin Planner, it can be really difficult  to  use every spare minute checking off your to do list.

But when you keep the vision before you, broken down into Morning, afternoon and evening goals, and, you keep it where you can actually see it, then you are so much more likely to complete everything on your list.

How to Start a New Habit

Establishing a new habit

A lot of people have a new year’s resolution of “always” and “never”

“I’ll never smoke” “I’ll always exercise each morning”. These are called habits, but no one, absolutely no one, gets there over night (unless they have a miracle deliverance, or they suffer through, or they have a heavenly download of yearlong motivation  and strength that never wanes).

But habits aren’t made or broken that way.  If you are stuck in the rut of “always” and “never”, then your verbage needs to change to:

“Begin”  and “taper off”

How to start a new habit

       Decide what you can do.

If you know, for example, that you aren’t going to, without fail, do your goal consistently, then don’t set it. That’s where everyone misses it. They set these impossible goals, miss one day at it, and quit all together. No, that’s setting yourself up for failure. Instead, start with a goal that  you know FOR SURE you will do daily, or weekly, or whatever time slot is reasonable. So if you know that you want to  run every day, then run every day. And make it your goal to run every day. That’s it. That’s your goal. If you just start with the goal of running every day, you can’t lose. And trust yourself. Tell yourself, “You only have to do some running every day”. As in, out  the door and to your car. And then Back in. Or, just to the kitchen and back to bed. That’s it. You just ran. Now. Can  you commit to just running, any amount, every single day? Sure you can. And I bet you know what I’m going to suggest next. Yup[, that’s right. Each day you’ll go a bit further.  One guy named Zig Zigler made it his goal to lose a hundred pounds and he did by running to the mailbox each day. That was his only goal. I’m sure you know where  that achievable goal got him. That’s right. It got him running every day. And he didn’t get there by saying “this is lame, any loser could do this”. No, he got there by encouraging himself. “Hurray, it’s January 15th and I’m still running every day”.

In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Zig Ziglar ended up running a mile a day, and becoming  a self-improvement coach.

So start with what you know for sure you can do

Build on it. Each day, try to do a bit more, but don’t make the “bit more” your new goal. Remember, you goal is just to do some of this each day.

Train yourself to encourage yourself. When you miss a day, (and don’t think it can’t happen) DON”T QUIT. Remember what a new year’s resolution is. It’s something you resolve to accomplish in the new year, not something you have to do each day. Your New Year’s resolution should be to establish a consistent (not perfect)  life habit of running. Your goal to reach that is to most days, run some.

Remember, you have all  of  this year to establish the habit

So go easy on yourself.

The biggest problem with New Year’s resolutions is bait and switch.

 

I’ve been thinking a lot about New Year’s Resolutions lately and their astronomical failure rates.

I would like to share some of my insights with you.

One of the things I have noticed is the mis-defining of what a resolution is.

A new year’s resolution is not a daily resolve, but a year long resolve.

Here’s how to create a resolution that a has a hope in hades of surviving.

Think about planning a plan, rather than just a vague absolute.

So what exactly is a vague absolute? Is that just an oxymoron?

Nope. See, most goals are really vague (like “be happy”) AND absolute

As in “be happy every day”.

A better “resolution” would be “Find out what makes me happy, and then GO for it”

After you do the first part, give yourself a week to plan out HOW to do it.

For example: this year, I want to be happy. I want to find out what makes me happy. And then, I want to do, every day, what it takes to make me happy.

The biggest problem with New Year’s resolutions is bait and switch.

Let me explain. A resolution is just something that you resolve.

The only thing you need to do to have a resolution is just an inward resolve that you are going to do something.

A New Year’s resolution is just something that you resolve to do in the New Year.

And a year is a long  time to achieve that.

Resolve what you would like to accomplish this year.

Resolving that you want to do push-ups every day for a year is not a good resolution.

That’s an “everyday resolution”, not a goal for the new year as a whole.

Yes, you can do push-ups every day, but that’s not your new years resolution… your new years resolution should be your “why”. Why do you want to do push-ups? To get a flat belly. That’s your new years’ resolution: to get a flat belly.

Remember, a New Year’s resolution is just something you resolve to achieve this year.

As long as your belly gets flat, you have met your new years resolution.

Breaking that resolution down into Quarterly, monthly goals, etc., comes after the resolution.

Remember, you’re not resolving to do push ups each day. You’re resolving to get a flat belly this year.

Why do we set ourselves up for failure each year? It’s because we mistake a resolution with a daily goal.

Very few people who get a flat belly do pushups every single day without fail. That’s because life happens.

When we mistake a resolution for a goal, we quit the first time we hit a hard day. Oh. I missed pushups today. I “broke” my New Year’s resolution.

No you didn’t. You can still be “resolved”, as in determined, to achieve that goal.

Remember, a New Year’s resolution is just something you resolve to achieve this year.

Write down what you have resolved to accomplish BY THE END OF THE YEAR.

Break that down into Seasonal goals. For example, take that waistline measurement and subtract what measurement you want your waist to be, from that. If you have, for example, a forty inch waist, but you think you can make it 32 inches, do the math; you need to get from 40 inches to 32 by December 31st.

So, decide how many inches or centimeters you need to loose each month, and develop an action plan.

Now, you need to know that just because you don’t meet your goal the first month, doesn’t mean that you won’t reach your year in goal. When I first started doing push ups, I could only do three. By the third day, I could do eight. By the end of the week, I was doing 20. At months end, I could do fifty.

See, sometimes your goals will wax and wane in spurts. Daily goals shouldn’t be something you beat yourself up over, because A. they are not good indicators of your chance of success and B. they are not resolutions. You need over-all goals AND daily goals to help you get there.

Remember…you aren’t a failure if you miss a day or two (or three  or four. Or even a whole month learning this stuff). You are only a failure if you stop trying to reach your YEARLY resolution.

Keep the end in mind and the daily goals will happen.
