Reasons Why you Procrastinate

We all do it.

But why? Why do we put off doing what we know we need to do?

Let’s cover the “why” and then the “how”.

5 Reasons why you procrastinate

Reason number one for procrastinating:

You don’t really want to do ittumblr_meyaq9it391refr1ho1_500

Let’s face it, sometimes a task is so gross, so gnarly, so time-consuming or so entirely complicated, that it just cramps our brain even to think about it. This is one of the reasons why some people shove the task to the back side of their brain…it’s just too painful to think about.

You want to do it, but you are overwhelmed

head slam

Yea, I think we’ve all been at this place. Overload is a key reason for putting things off, even when we know it’s important.

Procrastination reason number 3.

You don’t think it’s a big enough priority to do it now..

“Why do today what can be done tomorrow?”

Many procrastinators think this way. Unless their backside is in flames, they prefer to wait….and wait…and wait. The good news is, many of these midnight hour, crunch-time types actually work better under pressure (which is not very comforting to more rigid-personality type planners, but it works for them).

…or ever

Some people who are accused of procrastinating are not actually procrastinators. It’s just that, they have no intention of ever doing the task. But somehow, they know that society expects them to

Go back to school

Lose 10-pounds or even

Clean that top shelf

So to make people empathize with them, they join the ranks of “someday I’m going to” stop smoking, get rid of this old piece of furniture, or…whatever it may be. Probably, they are not bothered all that much with their habit, weight, or less than perfect lifestyle. But it makes them fit in to complain with the others and set resolutions they have no intention of reaching…or even trying to.

Reason number four:

Sometimes people procrastinate doing something, because they want attention…

We’ve all heard the story of the kid that misbehaves because they are being neglected by Mom and Dad. In relationships, some adults do this, because if their partner never had a complaint, they’d both never talk to one another.

…Or because, they resent having to do it.

This is not to say that the task is something that they dislike, or even that it is something that they wouldn’t cheerfully do, if weren’t for…the grudge. Yes that’s right, many heel-draggers consciously or subconsciously put off a task that they really don’t mind working on, just because they resent being told that they must do it. Sometimes the request is a reasonable one, but the person asked to do it, doesn’t think it’s fair. Or sometimes, the reason that the procrastinator won’t do the task, has nothing to do with resenting the task, but with driving the other person crazy….because of a long standing grudge that they have toward that person. That’s called Passive Aggression, and you can  learn more about that here

How about you; do you ever procrastinate? Would love to hear your comments!

My (not) perfect New Year’s Resolution

We all do it. And fail. So what IS a perfect new year’s resolution? Well, it’s one that resolves the right thing.

A lot of people do this bait and switch thing. They say that they are going to lose weight, they even write it down, and then the first time they fudge (pun intended) and go of the rails with their psuedo diet, they quit.

Say whaaat? Dude/dudette, your resolution was to lose weight. But look what happened in your mind…

( I call it the internal mind twist).

Your resolution was to loose weight, but you switched it in your head. It started off with a goal of “lose weight” but your perfectionistic, exacting, cruel task master of a brain changed that simple resolution to a ball and chain.

Here’s what your brain told you. “This year I resolve to never, ever, under any circumstances (including death in family, divorce, job loss or any “are you kidding me?” Covid restrictions to ever ever take a bite of anything fatty.”

And then, it happens. The break up. The shut down. The isolation. The job lay off. And now, here you are sobbing in a corner with your roommates hostess ding dongs staring you in the face. And you bite.

I almost think that people set themselves up for failure, knowing they won’t be perfect.

Am I right? On Monday morning, doesn’t everyone jokingly ask their coworkers, “How long did it take YOU to break your resolution this year?”

(um, like….10 minutes?)

This year, write your resolution on the wall. And when you forget to

go to the gym

abstain from something

Or work on that daily do list toward your goal,

remind your self… my New year’s resolution was not a perfect year of implementation and performance. My New Years resolution was to reach that goal.

Then look at the calendar, and remind yourself how much time you have left.

Better yet, break that goal down into monthly increments.

And finally, be easy on your self. These Covid restrictions have hit all of us hard, so give yourself a break, and enjoy your favorite desert before Midnight tomorrow :>

Monday’s Musings (um, four days later)

Good Morning! I hope you are doing well, and I mean, really really well.
Would love to share with you a thought that kept coming to me this morning.
As I was awakening, I kept thinking of Eve biting the apple and I asked myself; how could Eve ever have been dissatisfied with what she had? She had everything, except that one thing.
You would think she would have looked around the garden and seen what she did have, instead of focusing on  what she didn’t have.
“But really” I asked myself; “haven’t I ever done that”?
As I began to look about the room in the pre-dawn light, I began to see all kinds of potential; musical instruments I have not yet taught myself to play; hobbies and activities I planned to do some day; projects I didn’t yet have time to begin.
So many people want more, more, more, but with many of us, what we have is not fully appreciated.
Today I encourage you to look around you at the stuff, the giftings and the potential that you have already.
When I was very poor, I went for a walk one day, and I asked myself, “How can I make money with nothing?” Then, I noticed some wildgrasses by the highway. I scooped them up, artfully tied them together, and made a natural wreath. Then I sold several of my wreaths from the roadside, from my car.
All it took was seeing the potential of what I already have.
Like Eve, wouldn’t it be interesting to think that we already have everything we need?  You may not think you do, but I strongly encourage you to take some inventory today of what you already have, and to ponder it’s potential.

Delving into the Supernatural

A lot of you spend a lot of your time looking into various self help programs. And ultimately, all of these programs will direct you back to the need for some type of higher power. If you are into Wicca, you may look to nature for your inspiration. If you are a budhist, you may think we are all coming back as another creature some day, and so you may look within and try to muster up the willpower to modify your behaviour.  If you belong to a group that is culturally religious,  you may look to your group for guidance, believing that God views your people as a whole, and not individually. Did I miss a group? Did I misrepresent what you believe? Forgive me if I have overgeneralized any of you with my limited knowledge of various belief systems. Where I actually was going with this was simply a logical point: Why not look to the very one who created

nature

The human will

and every race of people and their various groups

for divine guidance? Sometimes I think that in our systems we create in order to meet the creator, we overlook….the Creator
